The best way to protect your concrete investment is to be knowledgeable on its proper installation and aftercare. Concrete sealers serve multiple purposes with none being more important than the other concerning the durability of your concrete.

Concrete curing products should be applied immediately after you broom your concrete.  Curing the surface immediately after the final finishing practice will ensure that the concrete develops the desired strength and durability in the surface as well as the structural integrity of the concrete. Never apply a cure & seal product to concrete that is bleeding or has visible water sheen on the surface. While a clear liquid may be used, a white pigment will provide reflective properties and allow for a visual inspection of coverage.

A single thin even coat is adequate.   IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW… that if  you choose a one step cure & seal product, it must be applied very carefully on exterior concrete to avoid discoloring or blushing on the concrete surface.  If applied too heavy, uneven or overlapped the cure & seal products will cause a darkened area on your concrete surface. The discoloration will cause no harm but will take away from the aesthetics of the concrete surface.

To apply Curing Compounds follow the steps outlined.

1.Immediately after your last finishing practice, which will be brooming the concrete for an exterior project, a curing compound must be applied to the concrete.  Keeping the moisture in the surface and throughout the structural concrete is essential to a durable surface.  Without a curing product applied to your concrete you will greatly reduce the surface strength and durability.

2.After the concrete has cured you will need to wash the concrete, let it dry completely and then apply a thin even layer of a concrete sealer.  Sealer helps keep the moisture from being absorbed into the mortar surface.  It reduces the amount of stress endured during Wisconsin winter freeze thaw cycles.  Fog or mist the sealer on with a sprayer.  It is very important not to puddle or overlap heavy areas of sealers.  To assure even coverage the sealer can be sprayed on and the paint roller should be rolled over the area immediately.  Rolling the product on with a paint roller can also be used without the sprayer to assure thin, even coverage over the entire concrete slab.

3.Protect your investment by sealing your concrete every September for two to five years depending on the type of product used.  Concrete like any natural material must be protected against the freeze-thaw cycle of the harsh Wisconsin winters.  As the concrete sealer wears from year to year a new layer of water repellant sealer should be applied to add to the longevity of the concrete surface.
